Rat Invaders?

These potatoes were dug out of the ground with these teeth marks on them. The potatoes showed no signs of being under attack, or disturbed in any way.

About half the yeild of 4 3metre rows were damaged with thses tooth marks. A rat was disturbed by the digging. Could rats have been the culprits?

Hi Squirrel, found your questions and comments about Goji Berries on another site. Noticed it was from a few years ago. I have just planted them this year, did you get any fruits within the first year? How have you found the years since?

Many Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul, I didn't even get any flowers before the news broke about some of these trees/bushes being at risk of carrying disease. This caused some anxiety in some of my fellow allotmenteers so I dug them up and burned them

Hi Squirrel, the marks on your potatoes are definitely rat teeth. Potatoes are poisonous to rats so they seem to know not to eat them but still chew there way through whatever they find. I have had whole potato crops destroyed in this way so I never store them in a single place.

Hi Andy, Thanks for your comment, the trouble with these rats was that they did not wait for them to be lifted from the ground. They went along the rows taking a bit out of many of the potatoes whilst they were still growing.
